A sleepy little creature

I'm going to assume that you are over the age of six and can confidently count, but what better place is there to start?

After all, the history of counting goes back to the stone age, perhaps even earlier.

Prehistoric people needed a way to measure the quantity of things.

To be able to say that this amount of rocks is greater than that amount of rocks.

This is what, of course, gave way to the concept of a number.

We say that the smallest number is zero.

Then, we can always add one to it to get the next number, larger than the previous one.

That is: zero, one, two, three, four, ..., and so on!

Naturally, there is no largest number! We can count as high as we want to!

As written language came to be, it was evident that we needed a way to jot these number down.

These are of course the well known symbols:
